Chinese business name ideas and what the characters mean
The four building blocks
- 品牌词 (brand word). The distinctive part — usually the transliteration or invented element that identifies you.
- 行业词 (industry word). What the business does: 科技 (technology), 文化 (culture), 商贸 (trade), 餐饮 (food service), 设计 (design).
- 吉祥词 (auspicious word). Optional but common: 昌 (flourishing), 盛 (prosperous), 达 (reaching far), 瑞 (auspicious), 恒 (lasting).
- 规模/地域词 (scale or place). Optional; used in registered company names, less often in the trading name.

Before you register
- Trademark search. Check the name — and near matches in sound and appearance — in China's trademark database.
- Company register. Check that the company name is available in the registration system for your locality and industry.
- Say it aloud. Look for embarrassing or unlucky homophones, including in the local dialect.
- Check the characters. Confirm they are common enough to read and type, and consistent in simplified or traditional form.
- Test the layout. Make sure the name works as a mark: two to four meaningful characters, even spacing, no stretched characters.
What to avoid
- Literal word-by-word translations that no Chinese speaker would say.
- Names that sound like, or look close to, an established brand.
- Rare characters chosen only for novelty.
- Mixing simplified and traditional characters in one mark.
- Ignoring how the name sounds when spoken quickly with the legal form attached.
Frequently asked questions
How do I build a Chinese business name?
Most Chinese business names combine four elements: an industry word, a distinctive brand word, an auspicious or meaningful word, and sometimes a scale or location word. The structure keeps the name descriptive and registerable.
What are common Chinese company name structures?
品牌词 + 行业词 (brand plus industry), 品牌词 + 堂/阁/轩/斋 for heritage businesses, and 品牌词 + 文化/传媒/商贸 for cultural, media and trading companies.
Which characters work well for different industries?
Technology: 科, 智, 云, 创, 信. Food: 味, 香, 膳, 鲜, 堂. Beauty: 美, 雅, 妍, 丽, 尚. Heritage: 堂, 阁, 轩, 斋, 匠. Trading: 达, 通, 昌, 盛, 联.
Do I need to check the name is available?
Yes. Check both the trademark register and the company registration system, and search for existing businesses with a similar name.
How many characters should a business name have?
Most Chinese company names use two to four meaningful characters plus the industry and legal form. Shorter marks are easier to remember.
What should I avoid in a Chinese business name?
Avoid unlucky homophones, rare hard-to-type characters, names close to an existing well-known brand, and inconsistent mixing of simplified and traditional forms.
