Why the date moves
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the moon, while the year is kept in step with the sun. Chinese New Year falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which places it between late January and mid-February in the Gregorian calendar. That is why the date changes every year — and why most dates on the Chinese calendar are described as “lunar” even though the system is not purely lunar.

What begins in 2027: the Fire Goat
The goat (羊) is the eighth animal in the zodiac cycle. 2027's stem-and-branch pair is 丁未: 丁 is yin fire and 未 is the goat branch, so the year is the Fire Goat. In traditional reading, goat years are associated with gentleness, patience and creativity, and a fire stem adds warmth and visibility.
The cutoff that catches people out
