The lunar new year cutoff
The zodiac year begins at Chinese New Year, which falls between late January and mid-February. If you were born in January or early February, compare your birth date with the new year date of that year: before it, you belong to the previous year's animal.
Example: the Pig year began on 5 February 2019. Someone born on 20 January 2019 is a Dog, because the Pig year had not yet started.
The 2027 year: Fire Goat (丁未)
2027 carries the stem-and-branch pair 丁未 (dīng wèi): 未 is the goat branch, and 丁 is yin fire in the five-element cycle. Traditionally, a Fire Goat year is associated with gentleness, creativity and steady effort rather than sudden force. The year begins on 6 February 2027.
What a yearly reading actually covers
The traditional yearly reading (流年) looks at how the year's element and branch interact with a person's birth chart, and describes themes to watch — relationships, work, health, money. It is a cultural framework used for reflection and planning, and it is not a prediction with a measurable success rate.
本命年: your own animal year
Every twelve years the cycle returns to your birth animal — 本命年 (běnmìngnián), literally “the year of your life”. Traditionally it is treated as a year to be careful and deliberate, and many people wear red clothing, red string or a red bracelet for protection. The custom is cultural rather than predictive.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my Chinese zodiac sign?
Your sign comes from your birth year in the Chinese lunar calendar — one of twelve animals in a repeating 12-year cycle. Because the cycle starts at Chinese New Year (not 1 January), people born in January or early February need to check whether they fall before or after that year's new year date.
What is the zodiac sign for 2027?
2027 is the Year of the Goat (羊), specifically the Fire Goat: 丁未 (dīng wèi). The year begins on 6 February 2027.
Why do some people have the ‘wrong’ zodiac sign?
Because the change happens at Chinese New Year rather than on 1 January. Someone born in January 1995 is usually still a Dog (1994's animal), not a Pig, because the Pig year had not yet begun.
What is 本命年?
It is your ‘own animal year’ — the year that returns to the animal of your birth, which happens every twelve years. Traditionally it is treated as a year to be careful, and people often wear red for protection.
What does a yearly horoscope actually describe?
The traditional yearly reading (流年) describes how the year's element and animal interact with your birth chart. It is a cultural framework for reflection, not a prediction with a measurable success rate.
Is the Chinese zodiac the same as Western astrology?
No. Western astrology uses the month and day of birth and the position of the sun; the Chinese zodiac uses the birth year in a lunisolar calendar, and often combines that with the five elements and the birth chart.
