Who Li Bai was
Li Bai lived during the Tang dynasty, the golden age of Chinese poetry. He travelled widely, wrote about mountains, wine, friendship and the moon, and is associated with a direct, energetic style that contrasts with the more measured poetry of his contemporary Du Fu (杜甫). Around a thousand of his poems survive; several are taught in primary school in China.

How to read a Tang poem
- Read it aloud. Tang poems are built on rhythm and rhyme; silent reading loses half of the structure.
- Follow the images. Li Bai works by stacking pictures — moonlight, frost, a waterfall, a sail — rather than by explaining.
- Notice the turn. Many four-line poems pivot in the third line, from scene to feeling. In 静夜思 the turn is 举头望明月, 低头思故乡 (“I raise my head to the bright moon, I lower it, thinking of home”).
- Check the place names. 白帝城, 黄鹤楼 and 广陵 are real places; knowing where they are makes the journey concrete.
Where to find them
The classic anthology is 唐诗三百首 (Three Hundred Tang Poems), compiled in the Qing dynasty, which places Li Bai alongside Du Fu, Wang Wei, Bai Juyi and others. His best-known short poems are also widely available with pinyin and translations, and they are a good starting point for reading classical Chinese.
