How many HSK levels are there?
HSK 2.0: six levels

Note that the totals are cumulative. The jump from HSK 1 to HSK 2 adds 150 new words; the jump from HSK 5 to HSK 6 adds about 2,500 more.
HSK 3.0: nine levels in three bands
The revised standard reorganises proficiency into three bands, each with three levels:
- Beginner (初级) — levels 1–3. Roughly 500 to 2,200 words, covering daily communication.
- Intermediate (中级) — levels 4–6. Roughly 3,200 to 5,400 words, covering study and work contexts.
- Advanced (高级) — levels 7–9. Up to about 11,000 words in total, covering academic, professional and near-native use.
HSK 3.0 also adds a translation section at the higher levels, which tests production rather than recognition only.
What the levels actually let you do
- HSK 1–2. Introduce yourself, order food, ask simple directions, handle everyday routines.
- HSK 3–4. Hold a conversation on familiar topics, understand simple texts, write short passages, and manage daily life or basic study in Chinese.
- HSK 5–6. Read newspapers and longer texts, discuss abstract topics, give presentations, and work or study in a Chinese-language environment.
How the exam is structured
HSK tests listening and reading at all levels, and writing from HSK 3 upward; HSK 1–2 are multiple-choice only. Speaking is tested separately by the HSKK exam, which is why many learners add HSKK preparation once they reach HSK 3–4.
Passing scores and scoring
For HSK 2.0, HSK 1 and HSK 2 each have two sections worth 100 points. The total is 200 and the passing score is 120. HSK 3–6 add a writing section: each of listening, reading and writing is worth 100 points, the total is 300 and the passing score is 180.
A score report shows the section results as well as the total. That matters because two candidates can pass with the same overall score while having very different listening, reading or writing weaknesses.
Test dates and registration deadlines are set by individual test centres and vary by country. Check the centre you plan to use rather than relying on a generic annual schedule.
Planning your study
- Fix the target. University admission and employer requirements usually specify a level — check which one before choosing.
- Work from the level word list. Cumulative frequency lists exist for each level; learning beyond the list before mastering it wastes time.
- Practise all four skills. A score in reading does not transfer automatically to listening or speaking.
- Take a mock test early. One full mock paper shows which section is actually limiting your score.
